What is Opening Event: Where to Begin?

Where to Begin is a new type of Opening Event for Edinburgh International Festival. This multi-artform production will invite audiences to explore a series of installations through the grounds of George Heriot’s before congregating to watch a spectacular projection.

The event tells a story of the extraordinary creative power that pervades Edinburgh every August and invites the audience to play their part in a new ritual to ignite the festival.

What does it involve?

Part 1 - you are invited to move through the grounds, experiencing the atmospheric installations at your own pace.

Part 2 - you will join your fellow attendees and congregate to enjoy a video projection.

Please note that this is a standing event and takes place outdoors.

What effects does it involve?

The event will feature an array of effects including:

  • Fire and pyrotechnic effects
  • Strobe lighting
  • Laser and haze effects
  • Loud music and noise
What time does it begin and end?

Ticket holders should arrive between 21:45 and 22:15.

The event will finish at 22:55

Do I need a ticket?

Yes, a ticket is required for entry and can be purchased online.

Where does the event take place?

The event takes place at George Heriot’s, Lauriston Place, EH3 9EQ. The main entrance will be from Lauriston Place.

Is the event suitable for children?

The event is not aimed at children and young people. However, there is no specific age restriction for entry.

Will the event be cancelled in bad weather?

The event is unlikely to be cancelled in bad weather, such as rain or light winds. Remember to dress appropriately for the weather.

All ticket holders will be notified via email and SMS if any cancellations occur. You may also want to keep an eye on our social channels, where any changes will be announced.

The event takes place outdoors after dark. Please wear sensible footwear.

Are refreshments available?

No. There will be no food or beverage available at the venue. Please do not bring any food or beverages with you and remember that no alcohol should be brought to the venue. You are welcome to bring a 500ml water bottle to this event.
