The competition, supported by Virgin Money and Fireworks Concert BroadcastersForth 1, is now in its 9th year and attracted hundreds of entries from children across Edinburgh, the Lothians and Fife. The winners were announced in a special unveiling at the Virgin Money Lounge, Edinburgh. Forth 1 DJs Boogie and Arlene, alongside Producer Marty, judged the entries on their bold use of materials, their bright colours and eye-catching designs. As well as seeing their posters throughout the city, the winners will enjoy an exclusive behind-the-scenes tour of the Fireworks set-up site at Edinburgh Castle and will win a family ticket to the spectacular concert in Princes Street Gardens on the eve of the Fireworks display.
The stunning visuals of the fireworks will be accompanied by unforgettable orchestral classics from the Scottish Chamber Orchestra. A special selection of music from Bizet's Carmen and Mozart’s The Marriage of Figaro begins the evening, with special guest, Edinburgh-born mezzo soprano Catriona Morison, winner of BBC Cardiff Singer of the World 2017, performing arias from each opera. After a short interval, the Orchestra takes audiences on a magical journey into the supernatural, with a selection of music featuring Glinka’s Ruslan and Ludmila Overture, Dukas’ The Sorcerer’s Apprentice - made world famous in Disney’s Fantasia, and Berlioz’ fiery Symphonie fantastique, accompanying the incredible fireworks display above Edinburgh Castle.
The Virgin Money Fireworks Concert is one of Edinburgh’s favourite annual events, bringing together families, visitors and communities from across the city and further afield for the grand finale to Edinburgh’s summer festival season. Over 400,000 fireworks choreographed to live music by the Scottish Chamber Orchestra will light up the sky over Edinburgh against the unique backdrop of its iconic Castle. The event - the largest fireworks concert of its type in the world – is enjoyed annually by around 250,000 people at various vantage points across the Scottish capital and its surrounds.
