If the rest of the Edinburgh International Festival matches its first 24 hours for audience excitement, innovation and pizzazz, it will be three weeks to remember.

The Times

The International Festival began at the weekend in explosive fashion. From the pyrotechnics at our Opening Event, to breakdancing at Usher Hall, Edinburgh has ignited its Festival spirit. In case you missed it (or want to relive the magic), here's the recap of this weekend's big moments.

What's coming up

The Outrun at Church Hill Theatre

In "a fearless mix of strength and vulnerability... Amy Liptrot’s memoir transformed into a delirious spectacle" (The Herald).

A young woman finds herself washed up back home on the Scottish archipelago of Orkney. She has no idea how or if she can rebuild her life after a decade of addiction. Flashing back and forth between Orkney and London, you get a glimpse into her former urban existence and its intoxicating temptations that pushed her to the point of destruction.

"The Outrun is on until 24 August, so there are plenty of opportunities to see what I am sure will turn out to be one of this year’s Edinburgh International Festival theatre highlights." (Arts Reviews Edinburgh)

To achieve this a series of carefully designed period costume changes take this story through time and the end result will be to some people a work of inspired creativity, to others a bit of a jig-saw puzzle.
