Here are your Family Friendly highlights at the 2025 Edinburgh International Festival.
Whether you're introducing younger children to the joy of music with Art of Listening for Families (ages 7–11) or bringing older kids to an electric performance of Prokofiev, this year’s programme is packed with opportunities to experience the music and dance together.
Ceilidh Sessions
Sun 3 Aug, 4pm

Enjoy an afternoon of music and storytelling in Princes Street Gardens, inspired by the Gaelic ceilidh tradition.
Energetic Norwegian folk ensemble Barokksolistene perform an exciting range of music. Alongside beloved tunes like The Gay Gordons and Strip the Willow, Barokksolistene bring their irresistible repertoire of Baroque music, sea shanties and alehouse tunes to the mix.
Art of Listening for Families

Discover the world of classical music together with your child.
Our flagship music workshop, Art of Listening, has been adapted for families. Led by a professional opera singer, pianist and facilitator, this interactive workshop celebrates the power of listening deeply, together.
Suitable for children aged 7–11, accompanied by adults of all ages.
NYO2: Prokofiev’s Fifth Symphony

One for the older kids. This evening concert features the outstanding young American instrumentalists of NYO2, led by Venezuelan conductor Rafael Payare.
They take on a thrilling pairing of Dmitri Shostakovich and Sergei Prokofiev. Listen to the edgy first movement of Shostakovich's cello concerto:
As part of their International Festival Residency, Carnegie’s Hall’s NYO2 brings together talented 14-17-year-old musicians offering fresh energy and new perspectives on orchestral music.
NYO2: Family Concert
Mon 4 Aug, 2pm

We invite curious minds to discover the magic of classical music in this joyful concert.
Join conductor Greg Lawson, known for his adventurous approach to music, and presenter Lucy Drever, a passionate musical storyteller, as they team up with NYO2’s inspiring young musicians for a transatlantic celebration of sound.
This concert is recommended for ages 7-11 but suitable for all ages.

Young Musician’s Pass
If your child plays an instrument or sings, is aged 8–18 and lives in Scotland, they are eligible to join the Young Musican's Pass (YMP)
YMP members can get their hands on up to three pairs of tickets for selected performances in the International Festival music programme. What’s included will be announced on Mon 8 May 2025, 12noon.
