Peni Candra Rini

Vocalist Peni Candra Rini sings to traditional percussion from her native Indonesia.

Peni Candra Rini is a sindhen: an Indonesian solo female vocalist who sings to traditional Indonesian percussion, otherwise known as gamelan. Born into a family of traditional artists and musicians from East Java, she describes herself as a ‘singer and an orator of the poetry of life’.

Her compositions and performances have won acclaim worldwide and have been described as ‘mesmerising’ (Planet Hugill) and ‘beautiful’ (The Guardian). A laureate of the 2022 Aga Khan Music Awards, Peni is also in demand worldwide as a lecturer on Indonesian music.

Her appearances have ranged from intimate performances in small Javanese villages to recent concerts with the Kronos Quartet at Carnegie Hall and the Philharmonie de Paris. Her International Festival recital will feature traditional and experimental music from her native Java.
