Leif Ove Andsnes & Bertrand Chamayou
Colleagues and friends Leif Ove Andsnes and Bertrand Chamayou juxtapose selections from György Kurtág's playful Játékok (Games) with Schubert's great piano duets.
Leif Ove Andsnes (termed ‘a pianist of magisterial elegance’ by the New York Times) and his friend and colleague Bertrand Chamayou (described as ‘hugely impressive’ by the Guardian) unite in an imaginative piano duet recital.
At the heart of the programme is a series of piano duo masterpieces written by the terminally ill Franz Schubert in his final months. These include the tempestuous Lebensstürme (Life’s Storms) and the tender Rondo in A major. Even more impressive is the dramatic and multi-faceted Fantasie in F minor, one of the greatest of all Schubert’s keyboard works.
The recital also features music by a major contemporary composer inspired by Schubert: György Kurtág. Andsnes and Chamayou will perform a selection from his Játékok (Games). The composer describes these ‘games’ as a celebration of ‘daring’, ‘pleasure in playing’ and ‘the joy of movement’.
This concert will be featured on BBC Radio 3 on 24 August.
[Ove Andsnes] has enviable control of a wide palette of pianistic colors
[Chamayou] brings a freshness to the interpretation, a sense of wonder and discovery.
