Kammerorchester Basel

An evening of 19th-century music with Seong-Jin Cho, under the direction of Julia Schröder.

Two women composers of the Romantic era hold the spotlight in this imaginative concert of 19th-century music. The ‘fantastic’ (The Guardian) Kammerorchester Basel performs under the direction of Julia Schröder.

Unfortunately, Hélène Grimaud is indisposed and will no longer be performing. We are delighted to announce that piano virtuoso, Seong-Jin Cho, will replace Grimaud.

Cho is a piano superstar. He made waves when he won the International Chopin Piano Competition in 2015, aged just 21, and is celebrated for his sensitivity and exceptional technical command. He will be performing Beethoven's moving and personal Piano Concerto No. 4.

Fanny Mendelssohn Hensel was the older sister of composer Felix Mendelssohn. Despite the discouragement of her family, Fanny never stopped composing. She wrote over 450 works in her lifetime, of which the sparkling Overture in C is her only purely orchestral work. The orchestra performs this alongside another rediscovered gem – the dramatic Fifth Symphony by prolific composer Emilie Mayer, who was described in her lifetime as ‘a female Beethoven’.

The Warm Up: Kammerorchester Basel

Festival Director Nicola Benedetti and Kammerorchester Basel Concert Master Julia Schröder discuss this orchestra's unique identity and sound as they perform with soloist Hélène Grimaud. Julia introduces the female composers that feature in this programme, and shares how the orchestra, in rehearsal and just before the concert, connect with the emotional heart and soul of the music.
