The Sound of Spirituals at The Hub
Experience moving African American spirituals in a collective listening experience presented by drummer, composer and educator Domo Branch.
Domo Branch is a rising star of the jazz world, performing alongside prominent artists such as Dianne Reeves and Wynton Marsalis. In conversation with author Simon Barrow he discusses the spirituals and his own work and presents a live percussion experience in the relaxed atmosphere of The Hub, the afternoon before his late-night performance.
Spirituals are religious folksongs that developed from enslaved people in the United States. These songs were a means for survival – a powerful example of endurance in the worst of conditions. Their influence can be felt across American music, from jazz to gospel, country, rock and roll and hip-hop.
The influence of spirituals also reaches across our programme, from Michael Tippett’s choral work A Child of our Time to choreographer Alvin Ailey's Revelations.
Join from 2.30pm and grab a spot on a sofa or chair for this surround-sound experience.
