EIFF: Showing Up
Michelle Williams and Hong Chau star in Kelly Reichardt’s intimate drama exploring art-making, creativity and resilience.
Dir. Kelly Reichardt / United States / 2022 / English
Lizzy (Michelle Williams) is a sculptor struggling with an upcoming show, family stress and her art-school admin job. Things would be a lot easier if she could only get her landlord, fellow artist Jo (Hong Chau), to sort out the hot water. But Jo’s mind is on other things, and when she adopts a broken bird, Lizzy must deal with the consequences. While the ins and outs of academic status anxiety provide sharp humour, Showing Up is remarkable for how it not only takes artistic practice seriously, but makes it compelling. Filmmaker Kelly Reichardt (Certain Women, First Cow) has a unique way of focusing attention – a precise, subtle and human style of cinema – and it’s a pleasure to witness one of the greatest working filmmakers on top form.

Director: Kelly Reichardt
Filmmaker and screenwriter Kelly Reichardt (1964, USA) grew up in Miami and obtained her MFA from the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston. Her debut feature River of Grass (1995) was nominated for the Grand Jury Prize at Sundance Film Festival and was listed by several critics as best film of the year. Due to a lack of financing, Reichardt continued shooting Super-8 short films instead, only to return to the feature format 12 years later with Old Joy (2006), which became the first American film to win the Tiger Award at International Film Festival Rotterdam. Reichardt continued to win prizes and earned major nominations with her subsequent films, including two Golden Lions (for 2010’s Meek’s Cutoff and 2013’s Night Moves), a Golden Bear (for 2020’s First Cow) and an Un Certain Regard nomination (for 2008’s Wendy and Lucy). Her latest, Showing Up, played in main competition at the Cannes Film Festival. Reichardt is known for her minimalist style of filming with a strong emphasis on mood and atmosphere.
