Cätlin and Marko Mägi with Finlay MacDonald & Ali Hutton
Estonian duo Cätlin and Marko Mägi join Scottish musicians Finlay MacDonald and Ali Hutton for an upbeat exchange of musical traditions.
Cätlin and Marko perform on the torupill (the Estonian equivalent of bagpipes), saxophone and the lesser-known jaw harp. Together they fuse tunes from hundreds of years ago with modern jazz improvisations. In dialogue, MacDonald combines his dedication to traditional piping with a sense of musical adventure, while Hutton is an award-winning multi-instrumentalist who specialises in guitar, whistle and bagpipes.
In unison, these four musicians uncover the synergies between Estonian and Scottish musical traditions.
Finlay MacDonald has emerged as one of the leading lights in the current crop of young pipers with deep roots in the pipe band tradition, but grafted on to a distinctly contemporary musical sensibility to produce a compelling hybrid.Kenny Mathieson, The Scotsman
