Artist Conversation: Life is a Dream at The Hub
The creatives behind this year’s production of Life is a Dream discuss working across different languages and cultures.
Director Declan Donnellan and designer Nick Ormerod are co-founders of the international theatre company Cheek by Jowl. Since forming in 1981, Cheek by Jowl has performed in more than 50 countries, with productions in English, French, Russian and Italian.
This year they return to the International Festival to present Pedro Calderón la Barca’s Life is a Dream. Performed by an ensemble of Spanish actors, this marks Cheek by Jowl's first Spanish-language production. It comes after many years of bringing their work to Spain and forming connections with Spanish performers and practitioners.
Donnellan and Ormerod chat with Spanish interpreter Juan Ollero about international collaboration in theatre. The event will be chaired by Beth Blakemore, PhD researcher in Hispanic Studies at the University of Edinburgh.
The Hub is supported by Sir Ewan and Lady Brown together with Flure Grossart.
The Hub Talks are supported by The University of Edinburgh.
