The Portal
A new podcast for unusual times.
The Portal brings together the talents of musician and composer Martin Green, director Wils Wilson, sound designer Eloise Whitmore and dramatist David Greig. They have woven together a tale of love, music, drugs and deceit; this story of obsession covers 40 years of night life and human connection.
Two obsessive recordists, Etteridge and Angela, were lovers torn apart by circumstance. From 1947 to 1988, they recorded any and every aspect of London nightlife, from war-time dance-halls to the legendary M25 raves. They crafted an incredible collection of 20th century documentation, but these recordings were not discovered until 2016. Because this secret couple never met. Instead, leaving messages for each other in recordings that form a dark story left for us to piece together.
With an original score by Martin Green – whose last work Aeons was awarded an Ivor Novello Award – and contributions from musicians including James Holden and BBC Folk Award-winner Brìghde Chaimbeul, this is a 12-episode podcast series unlike any other.
