Daniil Trifonov & Friends
The remarkable young Russian pianist Daniil Trifonov celebrates another side of his exhilarating musical personality – as a sensitive, eloquent chamber musician – in the last of his three performances at the 2016 International Festival.
Trifonov is joined in a powerful programme of chamber music by Rachmaninov by an eminent trio of musical colleagues: the commanding Armenian-American pianist Sergei Babayan; world-renowned violinist Gidon Kremer; and hugely respected Lithuanian cellist Giedre Dirvanauskaite, a regular collaborator with Kremer.
Trifonov and Babayan perform Rachmaninov’s Suites Nos 1 and 2 for two pianos – bold, early works of scintillating, fiery pianism that recount vivid stories in music, ripe with the composer’s unforgettable melodies.
Trifonov is joined by Kremer and Dirvanauskaite for Rachmaninov’s Trio élégiaque No 2, a hugely passionate, heartfelt work written as a memorial to Tchaikovsky, and with an enormously virtuosic solo piano part.
This concert will be broadcast live on BBC Radio 3
One thing that sets Trifonov apart from the typical pianistic juggernauts of the Russian school is the humility and imagination of his musicianship.
