Tenebrae
One of the world’s finest vocal ensembles, Tenebrae is renowned for its thrillingly expressive performances of music from the Renaissance right through to the present day.
Passionate, pure and astonishingly beautiful, the performances by chamber choir Tenebrae under founding director Nigel Short offer an experience that envelops the audience and captivates the attention.
For their International Festival 2016 recital, Tenebrae embarks on a journey from Renaissance Spain and Italy, by way of Mexico, to the resonant Romanticism of 19th-century Germany. They begin with the spiritual intensity of Victoria’s Tenebrae Responsories and Lobo’s Versa est in luctum, before the highly moving, radiant simplicity of Allegri’s famous Miserere.
After the astonishingly lively Missa Ego flos campi by Mexican composer Padilla, they explore the rich, expressive magnificence and noble piety of motets by Brahms, Bruckner and Reger, as well as those composers’ roots in the expressive polyphony of their Renaissance predecessors.
This concert will be broadcast live on BBC Radio 3
Choral music doesn’t get more magnificent than this.
