Sir John Eliot Gardiner brings his period-instrument Orchestre Révolutionnaire et Romantique, celebrated for its authentic accounts of 19th-century music, to the Festival for two phantasmagorical works by Berlioz on Romantic passion and spurned love, joined by American tenor Michael Spyres, French bass-baritone Laurent Naouri and the much-lauded National Youth Choir of Scotland.

The kaleidoscopic Symphonie fantastique tells an opium-fuelled (and autobiographical) story of love, obsession and horror, while in its sequel, the visionary Lélio, the composer returns to life through the power of art.
